Gibraltar is two and a half square miles, so where you stay decides how your days actually run. The one thing no booking site tells you is how far you are from the frontier, which matters enormously if you are driving down from Spain, parking in La Línea and walking across. So that is what we have listed, for all of them.

The shortest walk to the frontier of anywhere on this list, which makes it the practical pick if you are crossing on foot each day. Self-catering suites in the middle of town, so Main Street, Casemates and the waterfront are all a few minutes away on foot.

The most distinctive place to stay in Gibraltar by a distance: a five-star hotel built into a superyacht permanently moored in Ocean Village, with a casino and several restaurants on board. Close to the cruise terminal too, which suits anyone spending a night either side of a ship.

The oldest hotel on the Rock and still the one people picture when they think of staying in Gibraltar. Open since 1932 on the west face above the Botanic Gardens, with a garden pool and balconies looking across towards Africa. The trade-off is the walk: it is uphill on the way back, in a climate that spends July and August in the low thirties, so plan on a taxi at the end of an evening.

Wherever you are staying, we collect you from the door
Private vehicles cannot enter the Upper Rock Nature Reserve, and the cable car is closed for a full rebuild until around 2027. Our driver picks you up at your hotel and drops you back wherever suits.
