Morocco, the long way round

Your own driver, your own vehicle, and a route that goes well past the postcards. One day, six, or ten.

Most people see Morocco through a coach window on a day trip. This is the other thing entirely: a private car, one driver, and enough time to actually stop. Tangier is an hour from Tarifa, which makes it either a very good day out or the front door to a much longer journey.

Three ways to do it. A single day in Tangier, six days through the blue city and the imperial cities, or ten days that take you all the way to the Sahara and back. I arrange it all from this side, so nothing is left for you to work out in a second language.

  1. Met at the port

    Your guide is waiting for you at Tangier Port and stays with you for the whole day.

  2. The New Town

    A drive through the main avenues and the landmarks of the city that eight international powers built between them.

  3. The city walls

    Up to the ramparts for the wide view back over Tangier and the water.

  4. Cap Spartel

    The headland where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean. On a clear day you can see the coast you came from.

  5. The Caves of Hercules

    A sea cave with an opening shaped like the map of Africa, and about as much legend attached to it as anywhere in Morocco.

  6. The Medina

    Back into the old city on foot: the traditional streets, the markets, and the corners you would walk straight past on your own.

  7. Lunch, then back to the port

    A traditional Moroccan lunch to finish, and your guide and driver get you back to the port in good time to sail.

  1. Tangier to Chefchaouen

    Met at Tangier Ville and straight into the Rif Mountains. Chefchaouen by the afternoon, with the rest of the day free in the blue medina. Sunset from the Spanish Mosque if you have the legs for it.

  2. Chefchaouen to Fez

    A slow morning in the blue streets before they fill up, then the drive south to Fez. Evening free.

  3. Fez, then Casablanca

    A guided morning through one of the oldest medieval cities still standing: the Royal Palace gates, the Mellah, the Chouara tanneries, Al-Qarawiyyin. On to Casablanca after lunch.

  4. Casablanca to Asilah

    The Hassan II Mosque on the Atlantic, then north up the coast to Asilah - whitewashed walls, painted murals, Portuguese ramparts and a quiet beach.

  5. Asilah, and back north

    A morning by the sea, then towards Tangier. If the ferry timings allow, Cap Spartel and the Caves of Hercules on the way.

  6. Tangier Ville

    Dropped at the port for your crossing back to Tarifa.

  1. Tangier to Chefchaouen

    Through the Rif Mountains with stops for the view. The blue medina, Outa El Hammam Square, the kasbah, and the walk up to the Spanish Mosque at sunset.

  2. Chefchaouen to Fes

    An unhurried morning, then south through the mountains. Free time in the old medina when you arrive.

  3. Fes, then the Middle Atlas

    Guided through the UNESCO medina: the palace gates, the Mellah, Borj Nord, the tanneries. Afternoon drive up into the Middle Atlas to Boulaajoul.

  4. Into the Sahara

    Midelt and the Ziz Valley, then Merzouga. Camel trek out across the Erg Chebbi dunes for sunset, dinner and music at the camp, and a sky you will not get at home.

  5. Todra Gorge and the Dades Valley

    Sunrise over the dunes, back by camel or 4x4, then the gorge, the Valley of Roses, and the switchback road down into the Dades.

  6. The Road of a Thousand Kasbahs

    Ouarzazate, then Ait Ben Haddou - the mud-brick citadel you have seen in a dozen films. Over the High Atlas by the Tizi n'Tichka pass and down into Marrakech.

  7. Marrakech, then the coast

    Bahia Palace, the Koutoubia, Jemaa el-Fnaa and the souks. Then west to Essaouira for sea air and a completely different pace.

  8. Essaouira to Casablanca

    The fishing port, the Skala ramparts and the artisan workshops in the morning. North to Casablanca in the afternoon.

  9. Casablanca to Asilah

    The Hassan II Mosque and the Corniche, then up the Atlantic coast to Asilah and its painted medina.

  10. Tangier Ville

    A last morning by the sea, then Tangier. Depending on your crossing there may be time for the Grand Socco or the marina before you are dropped at the port.

Getting there

The crossing

All three trips run from Tarifa. You make your own way to the port - a short drive from Gibraltar or the Costa del Sol, with parking at the terminal. The crossing to Tangier Ville takes about an hour.

You are welcome to book your own ferry tickets. If you would rather not, I will sort the crossing for you both ways and send the tickets over before you travel, for a flat £70 arranging fee on top of the ferry fare. Coming by cruise ship, or already in Tangier? You will not need any of this.

Ferry crossings and weather. Sailings between Tarifa and Tangier can be delayed or cancelled at short notice, usually because of weather or sea conditions. That decision rests with the ferry operator and is outside our control. Hidden Gibraltar cannot accept responsibility for delays, cancellations, missed connections or any costs arising from them. We will always help you rearrange where we can.

Prices. All prices are per person in pounds sterling, based on the group size shown and, on the multi-day routes, sharing accommodation. Prices are confirmed at the time of booking.

Documents. You are responsible for ensuring your passport and any visas are valid for entry to Morocco. Travel insurance is not included and we strongly recommend it.

Itineraries. Routes and timings may be adjusted by your driver for road, weather or safety reasons.
